Cobble Creek Golf Course Receives 2009 Best of Montrose Award

U.S. Commerce Association’s Award Plaque Honors the Achievement

WASHINGTON D.C., June 8, 2009 — Cobble Creek Golf Course has been selected for the 2009 Best of Montrose Award in the Public Golf Courses category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).

The USCA “Best of Local Business” Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. The 2009 USCA Award Program focused on quality, not quantity. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USCA and data provided by third parties.

About U.S. Commerce Association (USCA)

U.S. Commerce Association (USCA) is a Washington D.C. based organization funded by local businesses operating in towns, large and small, across America. The purpose of USCA is to promote local business through public relations, marketing and advertising.

The USCA was established to recognize the best of local businesses in their community. Our organization works exclusively with local business owners, trade groups, professional associations, chambers of commerce and other business advertising and marketing groups. Our mission is to be an advocate for small and medium size businesses and business entrepreneurs across America.

They enjoy the luxury of having a patio home that maintains their yard during both the summer and winter months. This also makes traveling a lot more convenient.

Both Mark and Belynda use the fitness center regularly. The Sauna and Steam rooms are great a asset for relaxation after working out.

The Clubhouse has really introduced them to many of the community members they did not know. It is a nice way to enjoy a drink with new friends.

The Prehn’s like the many positive aspect’s the community has to offer, the diversity of families living here, the activities offered

MONTROSE — Montrose High senior Darby Jones got over the hump she’s been trying to get over for the past four years.

On Tuesday at the regional tournament at The Links at Cobble Creek, Jones shot an 89 to finish fifth at regionals and qualify for the state tournament in two weeks.

Jones, an MHS golfer for four years, has played in regionals the past three years, but never made state before. It’s really exciting,” Jones said.”I really enjoyed the girls I played with and was able to play through even the holes I struggled with.”

Lady Indians’ golf coach Jim Scarry said he was happy for Jones and said the difference for her was that she battled through adversity on holes where she had bad shots and came back strong. He said Jones got discouraged when she had bad shots in the past.

As a team, the Lady Indians managed to take sixth out of 11 teams, shooting a 308. Glenwood Springs took first, shooting a 290 and was led by Michelle Strip. Strip took first in the tournament, shooting a 69. Scarry said Stripp played some of the best golf he had seen.

Cedaredge/Delta finished second with a 278, Gunnison finish third (290), Moffat County finished fourth (297) and Palisade (298) fifth.

Montrose’s Hayden Davis shot a 109 while Morgan Schiller shot a 110. Scarry said both girls played solid golf and hopefully gained experience that will allow them to improve for next year’s regionals and make state as seniors.

Scarry and Jones travel to Colorado Springs for state on May 18.

Scarry said they would continue to work on Jones’ game to prepare her and said regionals was a good experience.

“We played good,” Scarry said. “And I am thrilled for Darby. It’s always great when you have someone make state, especially a senior.

MONTROSE — It’s been 16 years since Ted Nelson sold the Red Barn Restaurant to Jim Kerschner, and for those who know him, his return to the restaurant scene in Montrose will be a welcome one.

Tuesday evening, March 3, will mark the opening of Ted Nelson’s Steak House at the Cobble Creek Golf Community. It will be a transition from Lorenzo’s, owned and operated by Frank and Renee Cork for the past several years. As the Corks decided to step away from the rigors of the business, Tiff Hayden, developer of the Cobble Creek Golf Community, turned to Nelson to put his personal stamp on not only the restaurant, but the overall hospitality operations at Cobble Creek.

Hayden, who moved to the area from Tucson in 1995, turned to Nelson primarily because of his reputation. “A college buddy of mine who co-founded and owned a large chain of restaurants in San Francisco used to come to the area to hunt. In the process, he ate at the Red Barn and noticed all the things being done right.” Hayden said that his friend’s hunting trips occurred during the time Nelson owned the restaurant, and his recollection caught Hayden’s attention.

Nelson’s reputation came to Hayden from more than his college pal, having heard about Ted for years from local acquaintances.

“We are thrilled to death to have him out here. He’s a legend in Montrose,” Alicia George said when asked about Nelson’s return. “He will be fantastic with golf events, especially things like the couple’s league,” she added.

Herb George, who is president of the Cobble Creek Homeowners’ Association, said, “I think it’s going to be great for the Cobble Creek community.”

He mentioned that Ted Nelson was his first thought upon learning that the Corks wanted to retire, so he immediately contacted Hayden to lobby for Nelson to take over. Remembering Nelson as owner of the Red Barn, George said, “He always greeted when you came in and thanked you when you left. We are looking forward to having him here and looking forward to the community supporting him.”

“So when the situation came up, I was on the phone to Ted in about 15 minutes,” Hayden said.

In addition to the restaurant, which Hayden sees as “an integral part of the golf community,” Nelson will play a central role in providing hospitality services for special events at the clubhouse such as wedding receptions, school reunions, and party celebrations for things like New Year’s and Super Bowl. Priority will go to events for resident-members of the Cobble Creek Golf Community, but opportunities will be available for outside community events. Other hospitality opportunities will include Cobble Creek golf events and selected charity golf tournaments.

Nelson took over the Red Barn in 1977 from Fritz Hanna, who built and opened the restaurant a decade earlier. Nelson began working in 1970 for Hanna, whom he greatly admires to this day. Nelson built on Hanna’s tradition of making the restaurant a place where customers felt personally welcome. “It’s nothing mysterious,” Nelson is quick to say of his insight on success. “People want to enjoy the experience. That includes caring enough to know their names and letting them know they’re appreciated.”

As the term suggests, the key to success in the hospitality industry is outstanding service. Not only does Nelson plan to focus his attention and energy on working directly with his customers, he understands the importance of his relationship with his staff.

Industry studies indicate that one of the most consistent factors for success in the restaurant business is a lack of employee turnover. That had always been a hallmark for Nelson during his years at the Red Barn, where employees worked with him for years and have remained loyal friends ever since.

Nelson, who sees “lots of opportunity” in the competitive world of independent restaurants intends to do a relatively few things well. “We will keep things simple, from the decor and the size of the restaurant to the menu,” he said during a recent interview. When Ted Nelson’s Steak House opens, it will seat approximately 50 diners, and expansion plans will not go beyond an eventual 100 places, which he sees as the right size for what will continue to be his specialty: an enjoyable atmosphere that emphasizes personal attention and outstanding service.

In addition to the restaurant and special event catering, Nelson will be overseeing the snack bar and bar concessions at the Cobble Creek clubhouse for residents and golfers. His reflections on working at the recent Super Bowl party at the clubhouse capture his enthusiasm as a hospitality host: “The guests made the environment truly fun,” he said.

In order to make sure services expand at a pace consistent with doing things right, Nelson will begin serving dinners Tuesday through Saturday nights for most of March. Then he plans to add lunches Tuesdays through Saturdays to the schedule at the end of the month with Sunday brunches in the plans for late spring or early summer. During summer months, the restaurant will serve dinners seven days a week and lunches Monday through Saturday.

Ted Nelson’s Steak House will be an independent restaurant in a world of big corporate chains. His insight as to where it will fit is simple and basic: “We don’t have to continually reinvent ourselves — people have been dining out for some time, at least since the 1950s. People basically want a pleasant experience. Somewhere in this mindset is where I see our opportunity to excel.”

If you’ve always been tempted to learn to play golf, but never managed to find the time, look no further. Every year, the sport has new converts with millions of wannabe golfers all over the country yearning to learn how to play. No matter your age, it’s never too late to pick up the game.

There’s no better place to learn than Cobble Creek, in Montrose. This well-designed course features dramatic topography and glorious views along with the chance to experience a championship course. Of course, you don’t have to be a champion to play at the Cobble Creek Golf Club’s 18-hole, 6,983-yard, par-72 course. This valley course offers 360-degree views of the Grand Mesa and San Juan mountains for stunning scenery.

Whether you’re an adult, or wanting to teach your child to play, there is much more to golf than just the score. When you learn how to play golf, you learn about integrity and honesty and communicating with others. You learn how to deal with people and how to conduct yourself when golfing. For the nitty-gritty of how to play, taking a few lessons is best. But etiquette is something that is also an essential part of golf. If you learn proper etiquette it will give you an advantage over some people who have been golfing for decades.

First, as with any game, consider safety. Golf clubs and golf balls can be dangerous if someone isn’t careful. There are two easy rules to help avoid injury. First, don’t take practice swings toward another person. Second, don’t swing your club when someone is walking around and, conversely, don’t walk around when someone is swinging a club.

Another golden rule of golf etiquette is keeping quiet. Concentration is key on the golf course and while it’s fine to congratulate a member of your group on a good shot, you still have to remember that others are playing.

Stay aware of the pace of the play, too. Novice golfers are often slower than those with more experience. There are a couple of way to pick up the pace of play and that includes taking only one practice swing for each shot, as well as planning your shot and which club you’ll use before it’s your turn.

Also, be aware of the group playing ahead of you and make sure not to hit into them. If you think there’s the slightest chance that your shot could reach the group ahead, and hit someone, wait. On the flip side, if your group is playing a little faster than the group ahead, you can ask to play through. And then, there’s golf cart etiquette. Both motorized and pull carts can damage the golf course. Keep pull carts 10 to 15 yards of all tees and greens. And keep motorized carts on the cart path for the most part. They’ll wear down an area faster than a pull cart.

Of course, rounds of golf result in a bit of wear and tear to the course. It’s each golfers responsibility to repair the damage to keep the course in top condition. A divot is the chunk of grass that often comes up when playing a shot off the fairway. It’s common to take a chunk of the grass up with the club head. To repair a divot, pick up the clump of grass and put it back in the spot it came from, lightly stepping on it to help it grow back. A mark is made when a ball lands on the green. These can be repaired with a ball mark repair tool. If the ball goes into the sand trap or bunker, you should take the shortest route on the outside of the bunker to play it out. Then, use the rake that’s provided to rake over the shoe prints and club marks.

Just remember – when you’re on the golf course, treat it like it’s your own backyard. After each shot, make sure you leave the course in the same condition as you found it – or better.

If a peaceful, serene oasis appeals, then look no farther than the beauty of western Colorado. In this pastoral land, visitors are first stunned by the breathtaking vistas and then they’re amazed by the world-class amenities that include some of the best golf courses in the world. Cobble Creek, in the city of Montrose at 5,800 feet elevation, is an hour north of Telluride. It’s one of several must-see golf courses and residential communities on the Western slope. The prices are less than in other pricey resort towns and the golf courses are, well, nothing short of spectacular. Better yet, the area boasts a mild climate that will keep golfers teeing off long after other fairways are covered with snow.

These well-designed courses feature dramatic topography and glorious views along with the chance to experience championship golf, tennis, walking and bicycling trails. At Cobble Creek Golf Club, you’ll find an 18-hole, 6,983-yard, par-72 course surrounded by a 445-acre planned community. This valley course offers 360-degree views of the Grand Mesa and San Juan mountains. Don’t miss the brand new clubhouse set to open this fall. It will include a pro shop, locker rooms and fitness center, as well as Lorenzo’s fine dining restaurant and outdoor patio.

Real estate at Cobble Creek is another enlightening experience, with feature-packed homes at affordable price points. Here you’ll find a 445-acre master-planned community with a new eight-acre park with a children’s play area. Single-family homes start at $247,000 in the Spruce Point community within Cobble Creek, and top out at $760,000 for a home fronting the golf course. There are patio homes ranging from $333,500 to $475,000. If you want to have your own custom home built, spacious lots fronting the golf course are available, ranging from $123,000 to $189,000. Other lots off of the golf course begin at $98,000.

Exploring the outdoors is an enjoyable pastime anywhere, but especially so in southwestern Colorado. It’s ground zero for outdoor enthusiasts.

Recreational activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, skiing, hiking, white water rafting and fishing abound. And you can appreciate the mind-blowing scenery while you partake of these back-to-nature activities surrounding Cobble Creek in Montrose, Colorado.

No matter the season, there is something for outdoor lovers to do in this region. Winter brings with it the obvious options of cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowmobiling and snowboarding. Spring, summer and fall are the ideal times for a range of other warm-weather activities. It’s a hiker’s paradise and if you’ve ever had a hankering to learn rock climbing, you’re in luck.

Cobble Creek’s proximity to resort towns such as Telluride, Crested Butte, Ouray and Ridgway offer an even wider range of activities in the nearby area. There are also forests including the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Grand Mesa, Blue Mesa and Ridgway reservoirs, Curecanti, the San Juan National Forest, Owl Creek and the Cimarrons.

At Grand Mesa you can traverse countryside where pioneers once grazed cattle and where it’s a playground for former Olympic skiers and world-renown athletes. The top of Grand Mesa ranges from 10,000 to 11,000 feet above sea level, and the cool, green slopes are dotted with aspen, spruce and sub-alpine fir trees.

In nearby Ridgway, summer options include hiking or mountain biking on miles of trails, climbing 14,000-foot peaks, four-wheeling along some of Colorado’s hairiest roads, and boating and swimming in the reservoir.

Montrose’s proximity to ski towns such as Telluride and Purgatory give even more outdoor options, with classes on backpacking, camping, rock climbing and mountaineering at Telluride Outdoor School. In Purgatory, you can go hiking with llamas at the Durango Mountain Resort. The area also features miles of mountain bike trails, an alpine slide and horseback riding, fly-fishing and nature hikes.

You can even go white-water rafting along the Colorado River in Mesa Verde National Park. A bit farther away, in Aspen, you’ll find more white-water kayaking and rafting.

At Crested Butte, at nearly 9,000-feet elevation, you can find one of the country’s best mountain-biking destinations. Trails of all skill levels weave around the small, picturesque town.

And Haviland Lake, near Durango, is not far off a busy highway, but the kayaking here is superb. The water is crystal clear and the lake is surrounded by alpine trees.

Sure, Colorado is a wonderful place to visit in winter, but there’s so much to do year-round, whether in fall color time, winter, summer or spring. There are no shortage of rivers and trails in the area for the outdoor enthusiast living at Cobble Creek in Montrose.

The subtle charms of Montrose and the surrounding area are understated and elegant. Sure, it’s not as glitzy or celebrity-laden as Vail or Aspen, but that’s why so many people opt to go to Montrose instead. This is where you can have a wonderful time amidst breathtaking scenery that is an essential part of everything Colorado, and do so while relaxing in a cool and charming area where no one expects you to be trying hard to be glam. Instead, understated and family-friendly are the key aspects of Montrose.

There are a range of appealing restaurants in Montrose. First and foremost is Lorenzo’s Italian Restaurant right at Cobble Creek Golf Course. You and your family can choose from everything from pizza and sandwiches to salads, pasta, fish and steak.

Also in Montrose is the Elk Mountain Lodge, which is a spectacular new destination resort nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. The Tarragon restaurant is a world-class restaurant with a 2,500-bottle wine cellar designed to replicate an authentic mine shaft.

In the heart of Montrose, you’ll also find everything from top-notch Mexican food, to family steakhouses and seafood restaurants. You’ll find restaurants specializing in Indian cuisine, as well as Hawaiian, Southwestern, Chinese, Japanese, Italian or Latin American. There are also plenty of coffeehouses and bakeries for those early-morning or late-night stops.

If touring wineries is your thing, the Rocky Hill Winery is right in town and produces some of Montrose County’s finest wines. Theater buffs will enjoy the Magic Circle Theater, which is one of the best community theaters in the state. It offers at least five productions each season, as well as several performances just for children.

If you do get a hankering for a different nightlife scene, nearby Telluride offers a glam-free environment that’s right in style with what we love best about western Colorado.

Troy Youngren, head pro at The Links at Cobble Creek, puts it this way: “I thought I had a good superintendent in Denver, but Paul is the best I’ve ever worked with.” Paul Heide is the superintendent at Cobble Creek and describes his work there as “addictive, bordering on an obsession.”

Heide, 41, has been the groundskeeping superintendent at Cobble Creek from day one at the local course, having previously worked at Fairway Pines and before that in pretty much every facet of golf in his native Michigan.

Starting with the assumption that golf course maintenance is more complex than it appears, upon actually checking into things, it is immediately obvious that the complexity goes far beyond the initial assumption. The issues confronting a course superintendent include directing a staff of employees and deciding how to allocate budget, not to mention being an expert in chemistry, agronomy, entomology, ecology, with a little bit of being something of an onsite emotional therapist for golfers—sometimes a delicate group of folks.

“Why don’t you keep this course like they do at Augusta National for the Masters?” “There are too many dry spots on the fairway.” “I had a good round going until I landed my ball in a puddle on No. 8 because you are over watering!” “These greens are too slow when you aerate and top-dress.” Paul Heide says that he has learned over the years not to take questions like this too personally and tends to tell himself that golfers are excited about their game. When a beavertail sized divot goes unreplaced or a ballmark goes unrepaired, he credits the golfer with being caught up in the moment of anticipation for the next shot. A generous approach, to say the least.

Among the things he and his staff consider a high priority is being responsible to not only the golf course and its patrons, but also to the environment. “When ponds and creeks get overgrown with aquatic vegetation (often because of fertilizers from upstream sources),we could use toxic herbicides to attack the problem, but we won’t send those chemicals to the farmers downstream,” Heide said. “We’ll make the extra effort to muck out the vegetation by hand, which is not always the industry standard.”

Heide gives high praise to his entire crew for their work ethic and initiative, including spray tech Richard Heath and assistant Chris Carter. According to Heide, “Rich is always experimenting to find ways to use the least amount of herbicide to get the job done, often less than the manufacturer’s label rate. Chris makes continual efforts to upgrade our irrigation system, ultimately resulting in water conservation.” Whenever possible he and his crewuse spot solutions for watering and specific problems instead of taking a blanket approach. “It takes extra effort, but we think it’s just the right way to do things.” He is proud of the fact that they always leave a buffer zone free of fertilizer near waterways to prevent leaching into the greater environment. He characterizes his job as a combination of “science and art.”

As a case in point, Heide is a big advocate of incorporating native grasses. They are both naturally acclimated to local conditions and require less artificial support, but they add aesthetically to the course and support the game by providing rewards for keeping the ball in the fairway and properly penalizing a misplayed shot.

Heide started in the golf business just after graduating from high school. His bachelor’s degree is from the University of Eastern Michigan, and he says that he is always studying the science of turf and water management in order to apply it to the art of course maintenance. He clearly loves the job, pointing out how good it is to be able to work outdoors in a beautiful environment, but he will also confess to a paradox: “I don’t sleep well during the summer. I want to provide a perfect product for the golfers, which is obviously impossible. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night worrying about the pumps or sprinkler heads or the computer system, or even the weather, which always seems ready to go wrong at the worst time.”

But then, he’ll tell you that when winter comes and things slow down, he will be counting the days until spring and the grass starts to come back to life. “The thing I like best about the job is stopping on the course and hearing a foursome happy and excited because someone made a long putt—seeing people have fun on our course, our baby.” Asked what he would like to be doing in 20 years, he thought a moment and said, “Probably working on a golf course and at the end of my shift, reporting a problem to the super that I won’t have to solve at 3:30 in the morning.”
